What is the difference between coaching and psychotherapy?
People seek therapists and coaches for similar reasons- help with better emotional/psychological/relational health or support around specific issues or concerns. Traditional psychotherapy generally works within a medical model of mental health, and has the goal of diagnosing and treating mental illness. Coaching supports people in moving toward optimal wellness. I choose to work within the coaching model because of its life-affirming focus on wellness, as well as the freedom to work outside the western medicine box. I don't diagnose people with mental health disorders, but I DO help people move toward the intimacy, pleasure and overall wellness they desire.
